Winter 2022 Progress Report

The vibrant redevelopment of downtown is spilling up, down, and over our rivers to Dayton’s neighborhoods along all points of the compass. The Dayton Riverfront Plan continues to spur on this evolution. Below is the long list of the Plan’s projects that have been completed, are underway, or are funded.

 

Overall Plan Recommendations

  • Develop the Dayton Riverfront Plan website at daytonriverfrontplan.org
  • Develop a comprehensive waterway access plan

Projects in Planning/Design

  • Develop a financial plan and funding strategies
  • Develop riverfront development and ecological guidelines
  • Consider reconfiguration of Riverside Drive and James H. McGee Blvd.

Downtown Corridor, Great Miami River Central

Projects Completed

  • Reconstruct the Third Street Bridge
  • Schematic design for The Suns: Sunrise and Sunset parks and the Unity Bridge
  • Expand Link Bikeshare with two new downtown hubs
  • Widen the bike path at RiverScape River Run to allow for paddlesport livery vehicles and food trucks; construct a terrace for hanging out and small events just above the River Run
  • Add shade sails, tables, chaise lounges, and public art at the RiverScape River Run Terrace
  • Install a kayak/stand-up paddleboard rack and drop-off area at Monument and Jefferson to serve kayakers at the RiverScape River Run
  • Develop a multi-modal transportation corridor plan

  • Construct the Centennial Overlook at Edwin C. Moses and the Monument Ave. Bridge

  • Extend Great Miami Bikeway at the top of the levee in Sunrise MetroPark from Monument Ave. to Third St.
  • Extend Great Miami Bikeway at the top of the levee in Sunrise MetroPark from Monument Ave. to below the Art Institute

Projects in Planning/Design

  • Add a protected two-way cycle track on W. Third St. between Ludlow and I-75
  • Update the site plan for RiverScape MetroPark
  • Construct the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Memorial along Edwin C. Moses Blvd.
  • Redevelop Wright Dunbar Park into Honor Park, NE corner of Third St. and Edwin C. Moses Blvd.

Community Corridor, Wolf Creek

Projects Completed

  • West Social Tap and Table
  • Gem City Market
  • Construct a protected two-way cycle track from Wright-Dunbar Link station to Third Street Bridge
  • Implement pedestrian and cycling infrastructure improvements for routes to schools and parks
  • Renovated and upgraded kitchen at Adventure Central in Wesleyan MetroPark
  • Expand Wesleyan MetroPark with land acquisition to create a linked +100-acre park

Projects being implemented

  • Acquire land to establish Wolf Creek open space corridor
  • Construct the Wolf Creek Bikeway off the street from Bridge St. to Wesleyan MetroPark
  • Redesign and Reconstruct Salem Avenue with street trees and wide sidewalks, ornamental lights, and safe connections for cyclists
  • Improve McIntosh Park including off-street parking and renovated basketball courts
  • Redevelop 1005 W. Third Street in Wright Dunbar to provide multi-family housing
  • Implement the Wolf Creek Housing Stabilization project to fill in vacant lots in the Wolf Creek neighborhood

    Projects in Planning/Design

    • Lay back levees to create open space, south side, between Sweetman and Broadway (partially complete)
    • Revitalize east Wolf Creek as a mixed-use neighborhood; assemble land for infill residential, commercial, office redevelopment
    • Construct the Wolf Creek Bikeway: Bridge St. to Wesleyan MetroPark
    • Redevelop the Zion Center at the corner of West Third St. and Edwin C. Moses Blvd.
    • Redevelop the Gem City Ice Cream site
    • Continue the Wolf Creek Bikeway from Wesleyan MetroPark to Hickorydale Park
    • Install a new Link bike hub in Old Dayton View along Salem Ave.

    Culture Corridor, Stillwater River, Great Miami River North

    Projects Completed

    • Reopen the Deeds Point Bridge, connecting the Community Corridor to downtown along the Great Miami River Trail
    • Expand Link Bikeshare into the corridor with a new hub at Deeds Point MetroPark
    • Construct a new dog park at Triangle Park

    Projects Being Implemented

    • Improvements to Kettering Field to provide parking, new fields and pathways, orienting the entrance to Keowee St.
    • Construction of the new Greater Dayton School providing wrap-around support for kids in generational poverty
    • Remove tornado-damaged Foxton Court apartments on Shoup Mill Rd. and restore the area to natural habitat
    • Extend the Great Miami River bikeway north from Helena St. to Keowee St. on the east side of the river

    Education Corridor, Great Miami River South

    Projects Completed

    • Remove Tait Station low dam
    • Expand Link Bikeshare with two new bike hubs in the Carillon neighborhood at Welcome Park and at OneFifteen off Hopeland Avenue
    • Install improved crosswalks and countdown signals at the corner of Edwin C. Moses Blvd. and Stewart St.

    Projects being implemented

    • Construct the City’s first mountain bike park and make neighborhood improvements to Welcome Park

    Projects Funded

    • Construct infrastructure improvements at Edwin C. Moses Blvd. to connect the Carillon neighborhood to the river

    Projects in Planning / Design

    • Extend Great Miami River Trail on the west side of the river to West River Road at Nicholas Rd.
    • The Think Dayton building, the first phase of the onMain: Dayton’s Imagination District at the corner of Patterson Blvd. and Stewart St.
    • Pave, stripe and sign Carillon Blvd. parallel parking

      Technology Corridor, Mad River

      Projects Completed

      • Realign Valley Street between Troy Avenue and Keowee Street
      • Reconstruct Springfield Street from First Street to Smithville Road
      • Revise TechTown design guidelines to reflect an urban campus

      Projects being implemented

      • Construct a bikeway ramp along levee at Tech Town
