The vibrant redevelopment of downtown is spilling up, down and over our rivers to Dayton’s neighborhoods along all points of the compass. The Dayton Riverfront Plan continues to spur this evolution: The Gem City Market has opened; proposals for redevelopment abound along Third Street and Salem Avenue and in Webster Station; recreation and cycling improvements are being built along the Great Miami River to the north and south. Below is the long list of the plan’s projects that have been completed, are underway and are funded.

Downtown Corridor, Great Miami River Central

Projects Completed

  • Develop a multi-modal transportation corridor plan
  • Expand Link Bikeshare with two new downtown hubs
  • Improve the area around the RiverScape River Run whitewater feature at RiverScape MetroPark
    • Install a kayak/stand-up paddleboard rack and drop-off area at Monument Avenue and Jefferson Street to serve kayakers
    • Widen the bike path at RiverScape River Run to allow for paddlesport livery vehicles and food trucks
    • Construct a terrace for hanging out and small events just above the River Run with furniture and a public art mural in collaboration with the Downtown Dayton Partnership and The Contemporary

Projects being implemented

  • Reconstruct the Third Street Bridge
  • Install shade sails at the RiverScape River Run Terrace

Projects Funded

  • Extend the Great Miami Bikeway at the top of the levee in Sunrise MetroPark from Salem Avenue to Third Street
  • Extend the Great Miami Bikeway at the top of the levee in Sunrise MetroPark at the intersection of Riverview Drive and Monument Avenue
  • Keystone design element for the Gardens of Remembrance and Celebration in Sunrise MetroPark

Projects in Planning/Design

  • Create a new Sunset Park across the Great Miami River from the existing Sunrise MetroPark and connect them with the new Unity Bridge spanning the river

Community Corridor, Wolf Creek

Projects being implemented

  • Construct protected two-way cycle track from Wright-Dunbar Link station to Third Street Bridge
  • Expand Wesleyan MetroPark with land acquisition to create a linked park of more than 100 acres
  • Acquire land to establish the Wolf Creek open space corridor
  • Construct the Wolf Creek Bikeway off the street from Bridge Street to Wesleyan MetroPark

Projects Funded

  • Redesign and reconstruct Salem Avenue with street trees and wide sidewalks, ornamental lights, and safe connections for cyclists
  • Continue the Wolf Creek Bikeway from Wesleyan MetroPark to Hickorydale Park

Projects in Planning/Design

  • Lay back levees to create open space on the south side from Sweetman to Broadway
  • Revitalize east Wolf Creek as a mixed-use neighborhood; assemble land for infill residential, commercial, office redevelopment
  • Construct the Wolf Creek Bikeway from Bridge Street to Wesleyan MetroPark

 

Culture Corridor, Stillwater River, Great Miami River North

Projects Completed

  • Reopen the Deeds Point Bridge, connecting the Community Corridor to downtown along the Great Miami River Trail
  • Add a synthetic turf field at Kettering Field
  • Expand Link Bikeshare into the corridor with a new hub at Deeds Point MetroPark

Projects Funded

  • Extend the Great Miami River bikeway north to Keowee Street

Projects in Planning/Design

  • Develop the Connor School, a private K-8 school at Deeds Point that will serve 400 under-resourced students

Education Corridor, Great Miami River South

Projects Completed

  • Remove Tait Station low dam
  • Expand Link Bikeshare with three new bike hubs in the Carillon neighborhood at Welcome Park and at OneFifteen off Hopeland Avenue
  • Construct the Bike Yard, a bicycle playground at Welcome Park

Projects being implemented

  • Improve safety and accessibility at Stewart Street at the bridge with crosswalks and countdown signals

    Technology Corridor, Mad River

    Projects Completed

    • Realign Valley Street between Troy Avenue and Keowee Street
    • Reconstruct Springfield Street from First Street to Smithville Road
    • Revise TechTown design guidelines to reflect an urban campus

    Projects being implemented

    • Create public open space and access along the levee at Tech Town

    Projects in Planning/Design

    • Build the public park at The Point
